Building step-by-step tutorials with the Tutorial Builder

The Tutorial Builder (currently in beta) turns a lesson idea into a real MakeCode tutorial: the kind that walks students through building a program one step at a time, inside MakeCode itself.

Making a tutorial

1. From the Dashboard, click the Tutorial Builder tile, then + to start a new one.

2. Describe the lesson in the chat, for example:

   A tutorial for grade 5 where students build a plant moisture alarm that shows a sad face when the soil is dry

3. MicroChat writes the tutorial steps and a working solution program. If the lesson needs a Forward Education kit, it includes the right extension automatically.

4. Use the tabs to check the result:

   • Steps – the instructions students will read.
   • Solution blocks – the finished program.
   • Preview in MakeCode – see exactly what students will see.

5. Not quite right? Keep chatting: "Make step 3 simpler" or "Add a step about testing it."

MicroChat also gives your tutorial a title. You can change it any time.

Publishing

Click Publish. MicroChat creates a MakeCode link. Share that link with students — when they open it, MakeCode launches straight into your tutorial. No extension, no approval, nothing to install.

Good to know

• Links don't expire. A published tutorial stays available.
• Each publish makes a new link. If you edit and publish again, share the new link; the old one keeps the old version.
• Students may see MakeCode's standard note about content shared by other users. That's normal for tutorials published this way.
• Your tutorials appear in My Chats with a purple Tutorial tag.
