Why doesn't my 3D printer/laser detect the memory card?

Whether it's an SD card, microSD card, or USB thumb drive, when a 3D printer or laser engraver fails to recognize the storage drive, there are some common causes.

1. Wrong file system:
Most printers expect the FAT32 file format. If your storage drive is NTFS or another type, the device may not read it - use the Format function on your computer to check the file system and/or format the storage drive to FAT32.

2. Corruption via improper ejection:
Though rare, removing a storage drive from a computer without first "ejecting" it can cause file corruption.

3. Encryption:
Some computers or networks are configured to automatically encrypt any storage media that is plugged in (often with BitLocker) This can cause a storage drive to become unreadable, as most devices lack the ability to decrypt drives. Check your computer's encryption settings and ensure the drive is not encrypted.

Institutional networks are often configured to encrypt drives automatically.

4. File types:
Some devices won't show a storage drive at all unless it contains printable files in the correct format - ensure files have been prepared/formatted for the correct hardware and saved in a compatible format.

Files with very long filenames or special characters can also cause problems for a device's file system.

5. Drive too large:
Many devices can't read removable storage drives over 32GB - avoid using storage devices larger than this.

If all else fails, it's a good idea to try using a different USB stick altogether. If issues persist, reach out to the support team for your printer's manufacturer.
