Why is there no current reading from the Energy Sensor in the Smart Solar Energy Kit?

A voltage of 4V or more is required to generate a current. The Energy Sensor must also be connected to an output device. 

When the voltage is below 4 V, the solar panel is not producing enough voltage for the connected device to operate or draw power. As a result, little or no current will flow. Try moving the panel to a brighter light source to increase the voltage.

Current only flows when a device (the load) is connected and draws power from the source (the panel). If no device is connected, the circuit is open and the current will read 0 mA.
